SUNSHINE-Y NEWS: PDX Fruit and Veg news and links, week of July 2

It’s July. Still raining. PLEASE SPARE US. It’s warm though, so I know it’s not October. I bet this is what today looks like around Interlaken, Switzerland…. Banana Nick LOVES it here…

OK onto the news….

FRUIT PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN VERY LITTLE FRUIT:  In the spirit of last week’s post about “fake” healthy food, here is an article about the many many products out there touting themselves as containing fruit, but actually none exists. So next time you think you are getting strawberries in that Strawberry Pop Tart (is anyone actually fooled by this?) then you better think twice. Yoghurt is a big one in this category…most youghurts contain very little real fruit in those cups.

TOMATOES ARE BECOMING LESS FLAVORFUL: This is a great article about how the flavor has been grown out of tomatoes so that they look better on our supermarket shelves. The genes that make them nice and bright red also deteriorate their awesome flavor. It is very exciting tasting a fresh tomato and realizing that they dont taste anything like that when purchased at the grocery store. Sad. This reminds me of the banana and how we really only see one type of banana (the Cavendish) because of its storage and shipment properties. The future will be grey toned!

Mom of 6 without a car…inspiring story from SE Portland!
Portland’s Compost ideas are exposed…the New Yorker investigates our city-wide recycling.
Are you getting enough Vitamin M?…music makes us happy inside.

The people at Comedy Central have laid this blog to waste. These are very funny to read, and makes me painfully aware that the whole food/eating well as a blog idea is overdone and …. and I am a part of it. SIGH…..
Is Breathing Making You Fat?….the drawbacks to breathing.
4 Quick and Healthy Substitutes for Mayo…including less mayonnaise.
6 Gluten Free Dance Moves…zero calorie two step!
8 Pictures of Kale…kale is allll the rage.
BN Out!

  1. I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was
good. I do not know who you are but certainly you are going to a famous blogger if you aren’t already ;) Cheers!

  2. I guess the Manhattan CC (is it still alive?), Memphis CC (Tennessee), Marshall CC (New York) or the Mechanics Institute CC (San Francisco). The Memphis Chess Club opened in 1877 (closed due to city wide ilenlss), then reopened in 1901. Does the club need to be continuous? The Kansas City Chess Club (Missouri) is old, but not continuous.
